Motherwort is one of my favourite herbs. The name “Motherwort” tells us this herb has been used for hundreds of years to help heal women; “wort” is an old English word meaning 'to heal' or 'medicine', “mother” indicates it is particularly helpful to women, although men can use it too.
Motherwort's botanical name, “Leonurus cardiaca”, firstly describes the shape of the leaves “leonurus” means like a lion’s tail, the second part “cardiaca” means “for the heart”, as it is traditionally used for heart problems.
I have used Motherwort for decades to help women who have problems with anxiety, palpitations and low mood, especially when those problems are associated with hormonal imbalances. For example, due to premenstrual issues, menopause or after giving birth.
Motherwort is normally used in a mixture with other herbs selected to best help each person’s specific health complaints.
Of course, as with any health imbalances nutritional and dietary needs also have to be addressed for lasting health; the B vitamins, magnesium and high quality fats such as omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 are commonly needed for both mental health and hormonal problems. Research shows the Entire Katoa Food State supplements have high absorption and bioavailability.
Motherwort also has been used for centuries for many other problems, such as digestive disorders, asthma, and skin inflammations.
Modern day research has to some extent re-discovered the health benefits of Motherwort. Studies have confirmed it has antibacterial actions, contains protective antioxidants, and decreases inflammation and pain. Research has also shown it supports the heart and circulation, and helps lower blood pressure. Clinical trials have demonstrated it is an effective sedative, so helps relax the mind and body.
Always seek advice before using any herbal medicines.
